ORA-04031: when restoring spfile using rman

When trying to restore the spfile from rman  you might encounter the following error

rman target /

connected to target database (not started)<
RMAN> startup force nomount
starting Oracle instance without parameter file for retrieval of spfile

RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-03002: failure of startup command at 07/12/2013 11:09:40
RMAN-04014: startup failed: ORA-04031: unable to allocate 70464 bytes of shared memory ("shared pool","unknown object","sga heap(1,0)","KTI-UNDO")
RMAN> exit

RMAN will use certain default values. Sometimes, these default values may not be sufficient (depending on your version/os).

This is a well known behavior.
set this environment variable to a higher value.
export ORA_RMAN_SGA_TARGET= xxxxxxx
